What to Look for in a Colostrum Supplement
Colostrum is one of the fastest-growing supplements on the market right now —
and one of the most confusing to shop for. Brands use very different doses,
withhold critical numbers, and lean heavily on aesthetic marketing instead of
what's actually on the label. Here are the six factors we used to evaluate
every product on this list.
1. Disclosed IgG percentage on the label. IgG
(immunoglobulin G) is the active immune compound in colostrum — the thing the
entire supplement is built around. The industry standard for a meaningful product
is a minimum of 20% IgG, with 25–40% considered
premium. Despite this, most colostrum brands refuse to put the IgG percentage
on their label. If a brand won't tell you the IgG concentration, you're buying
on faith.
2. Real dose per serving. The active dose range in published
colostrum research is roughly 1–3 grams per day for general immune and gut
support, with higher doses (5g+) used in athletic performance studies. Anything
under 1,000 mg per scoop is a token amount. The sweet spot for a daily-use
product is 2,000–3,000 mg.
3. Sourcing transparency. Look for grass-fed, US-sourced cows,
a calf-first commitment (calves get colostrum before any is collected for
supplements), and no rBST, antibiotics, or added hormones.
4. Low-heat processing. Heat destroys the bioactive compounds
that make colostrum work. The best products use low-temperature processing
(under 140°F) to preserve immunoglobulins, growth factors, and lactoferrin.
5. Clean ingredient list. A serious colostrum product should
be either single-ingredient or have a very short list. Watch out for proprietary
blends that bury the actual colostrum amount alongside whey, lactoferrin, and
probiotic add-ons — those reduce the actual colostrum you're getting per scoop.
6. Made in USA, cGMP-certified facility, with a real guarantee.
cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) certification is the floor. A
60–90 day money-back guarantee tells you the company actually expects you to
feel a difference.
